Counting the taps, not the megabytes

A desktop shows a chart, an order window and the specification of a symbol at the same time. A handset shows one of them, and each of the other two is a journey. That is the whole difference between the two arrangements, and it is worth counting rather than guessing: pick the three actions you perform most often and count the taps each one currently costs.

Most journeys turn out to be short and one turns out to be long. The long one is usually the detail you consult occasionally — contract size, the step by which volume moves, the levels already attached to an open position — because it is filed several screens deep on the assumption that nobody needs it in a hurry.

Shortening the path you actually walk

A watchlist is a shortcut in disguise. A handset arrives with a long default list, and every symbol in it that you never trade is a scroll standing between you and the four that you do. Cutting the list to those four removes more taps than any setting elsewhere in the application.

The same applies to what the first screen opens on. A handset returns to wherever it was left, so leaving it on the screen you use most turns a two-tap journey into none, and leaving it on a screen you rarely use turns every session into a short walk back.
